Description:
1948 mfr. COLT WOODSMAN .22 LR “MATCH TARGET” 2nd Series Rimfire Pistol C&R

Second Series of WOODSMAN PISTOLS

Here Ancestry Guns presents a C&R Colt Woodsman Second Series “Match Target” Pistol made in 1948 in Hartford, Connecticut. Manufactured by Colt's Manufacturing Company from 1915 to 1977, this pistol was the brainchild of John Moses Browning, one of the most influential gun designers of all time. The Woodsman Match Target was specifically designed for precision shooting and quickly became a favorite among sports shooters for its accuracy and reliability. This example is from the second series of the Colt Woodsman, known as the "Post-War" series, saw production resume shortly after World War II. This series was manufactured between 1947 to 1955 which introduced several refinements and improvements over the original design.

There are three Woodsman series with the first running from 1915 to 1947, the second from 1947 to 1955, and third from 1955 to 1977. Each series has three models, a Target, a shorter barreled Sport, and a Match Target competition pistol. They weren't initially called "Woodsman," but simply "Automatic Target Pistol." Colt soon noticed the model's popularity with outdoorsman, however, and added the "Woodsman" name in 1927. The Woodsman has had several well known fans, among them Ernest Hemingway, General George S. Patton, and Harry Selby, the white hunter made famous by Robert Ruark. Colt stopped production in 1977 because the design, which requires considerable handwork in production, became too expensive to produce and compete with more modern pistols.

In the post war years, Colt produced three very similar economy models. They were the Challenger, Huntsman, and the Targetsman. The actions on these economy models were the exact same internally to the higher end models of the same period, lacking only in some of the “refinements”. Because these guns were not assembled in a strict numerical sequence, there is no exact serial number dividing line. Thus, serial number overlaps numbering in the thousands are common.
