Description:
The Colt U.S. Army Model 1909 "New Service" bridged the gap between the revolver era and the adoption of the semi-automatic pistol for the U.S military. It was issued as a stopgap firearm to address urgent needs in the Philippines during the Moro rebellion, where earlier models of .38 caliber revolvers were proving to be inadequate against close-quarters combatants wielding large-bladed weapons. The 1909's powerful .45 Colt cartridge was selected for its superior knockdown power. Production totaled around 21,500 units, nearly all of which were shipped to the Philippines. Many were lost in combat, captured by Japanese forces during WWII, or retained for use by local forces. Its short production run—May 28, 1909 to September 13, 1911—makes it one of the most short-lived of all U.S. military handguns. This example of the Model 1909 was made in 1911, near the end of its production run. It shows very little finish wear and no visible pitting. The bore is clean and bright. The grip panels are in excellent shape, with no deep scratches or cracks. Original nitre bluing is visible on the hammer and frame screws and the trigger is color case-hardened. The action is as smooth as a Colt revolver should be, and the cylinder lockup is nice and tight. This 1909 does not feature a transfer bar safety. The numbers all match and are visible in all the correct places. The presence of inspection marks by both Carter and Moore, as well as the "F.B." stamp indicating supervision under Major Frank Baker, are correct for 1911 production and show this to be a transitional unit between the two line inspectors, thus increasing its appeal to collectors. This revolver is not sold with a case or box. .45 Long Colt
