Offered here for sale and just acquired is this fine Plainfield M1 .30 Cal. Carbine. The Plainfield Machine Company was incorporated in New Jersey (initially as a machine-shop) on February 20 1951. They transitioned into manufacturing commercial (civilian) versions of the M1 Carbine (or carbine-style rifles in .30 Carbine) after World War II.
The largest producers of commercial-market M1 Carbines after the war were Plainfield (~112,000 units 1962-1978) and then Iver Johnson Arms Company (~96,700 units 1978-1992) after Plainfield’s assets/production were taken over.
Plainfield appears to have been actively manufacturing carbines from about 1962 through about 1978. Serial No. 17499 this Plainfield .30 Cal Carbinewas mfd. likely in the early/mid years of Plainfield’s commercial production.
This is a commercial civilian version of the M1 Carbine style rifle in .30 Carbine, built by Plainfield using either surplus or compatible parts and their own receivers for the civilian market. Because it is commercial, it typically is not an original wartime U.S. military issue model of the M1 Carbine (used ~1942-45). This carbine is clean with only a few bits of dust and dried oil which we will clean before shipping. The barrel has a mount for scope but can be easily removed by request should it not bhe needed.
