Description:

mith & Wesson Model 39
The Smith & Wesson Model 39 holds significant value among collectors and shooting enthusiasts who recognize its pivotal role as the company’s introduction into the modern semi-automatic pistol market. Introduced in the mid-20th century, the Model 39 was the first semi-automatic pistol to be widely adopted by American law enforcement agencies, marking a notable transition from the traditional Smith & Wesson Model 19 revolver chambered in .357 Magnum.
Chambered in 9×19mm Parabellum, the Model 39 was Smith & Wesson’s first widely produced double-action/single-action (DA/SA) semi-automatic pistol. Designed as a service sidearm, it featured a single-stack magazine—modest in capacity by today’s standards—along with an exposed hammer and slide-mounted safety and decocking controls.
Praised for its reliability, intuitive handling, and balanced ergonomics, the Model 39 set the foundation for many subsequent S&W semi-automatic designs. Later variants expanded on its concept with increased magazine capacity and the use of modern materials and finishes. Today, the Model 39 remains highly regarded for its historical importance and its influence on the evolution of American service pistols.
