Description:
Armalite AR-7 “Explorer” Takedown Survival Rifle 16" 22 LR Box Manual 1 Mag
MFG — Costa Mesa, CA (1959–1973)

The AR-7 “Explorer” was designed in the late 1950s by Eugene Stoner and produced by Armalite in Costa Mesa, California between 1959 and 1973. Built as a lightweight, takedown survival rifle for downed aircrews and outdoors folk, it became famous for stow-and-go convenience: the barrel and action disassemble and all the parts nest neatly inside the hollow stock.

Description
This particular example is the classic takedown survival rifle that stores in its plastic stock. It features a blued barrel with a bright, shiny bore and good rifling. The takedown system uses a large, grooved nut for quick, sure assembly and disassembly between barrel and receiver. The black semi-automatic action is mechanically solid and fed by a detachable magazine; safety is a thumb safety and there’s an extendable bolt pull. Magazine release is located inside the trigger guard.

Markings on the right side of the receiver read:
ARMALITE Logo ®
AR-7
EXPLORER
COSTA MESA CALIF. U.S.A.
PATENTS PENDING

Serial number is stamped on the right front of the trigger guard. There’s a threaded hole in the rear of the receiver for attaching to the stock. The receiver carries a rear aperture sight that mates with the front ramp sight. Receiver and metal show only light handling marks.
The stock is made of a glossy, multi-colored plastic (typical of early AR-7s) which houses the barrel, receiver and one magazine when the rifle is broken down. The stock has a grip-bottom access/handle used to tighten the screw that secures the receiver when assembled, and a rubber butt cover that fits over the rear to hold parts in place. Stock condition: generally light handling marks.
