This very revolver is pictured and identified on page 368 of Don Wilkerson's Colt's Double- Revolver Model of 1878 along with two other Colt revolvers with Australian military acceptance marks. Wilkerson stated that the Australian stamps were applied sometime after 1901, most likely during the early part of World War II when the government issued a call for arms. It is often referred to as the Frontier or the Double Action Army revolver. The Model 1878 was designed by William Mason, Colt's factory manager and Charles Brinckerhoff Richards, Superintendent of Engineering. It was similar in design to the Colt Model 1877. The Model 1878 had a larger frame and is therefore sometimes referred to as the large frame double-action revolver, while the Model 1877 is likewise referred to as the "small frame" double-action revolver. The Model 1878 was considered a more robust and reliable design than the Model 1877. This example is British proofed with the right side of frame marked “1D[broad arrow]D81”. The factory letter states the revolver was shipped on February 8, 1886, to Colt's London Agency, London, England, with a 5-1/2 inch barrel in .476, blue finish, and hard rubber stocks. This was part of a 100 gun shipment. The overall condition is very good. Traces of original blue are present in low handled areas. Strong action. The bore is shiny bright with strong rifling. Solid grips with minimal handling wear. Markings are legible. Replacement ejector rod spring. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 5-1/2 inches.
