SELMA, ALABAMA Period Copy Henry Deringer’s Pistol

Here we present an antique Period Copy of Henry Deringer’s Percussion Pocket Pistol, made circa the 1850s by C. Suter. C. Suter is one of 64 known copyists of the infamous pocket pistol. These pistols marked C. Suter are attributed to Andrew Wurfflein. Wurfflein arrived in New York from Germany in 1832 and settled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. By 1840, he was granted U.S. citizenship. In 1844, his brother John, also a gunsmith by trade, immigrated. They worked together for some time, and were two of the six that founded the Shuetzen Verein, a prominent German shooting club in Philadelphia. Their work included rifles and pistols, including close copies of their Philadelphia neighbor Henry Deringer’s hit pocket pistol.
The Civil War brought new technology to weapons and when sales of the Deringer pistol declined, Henry turned to the courts to defend his trademark.  Suits were brought against several of the imitators, but it was his successful 1863-70 case against A. J. Plate that set patent infringement history.  A District court awarded Deringer $1,770 in damages and issued a permanent injunction against Plate's use of the Deringer trademark. On appeal the California supreme court upheld the verdict.

The overall condition is good. Strong action. The bore has dimmed and remains in good shape for its age. Sharp engravings throughout. Markings are legible. The walnut is in very good shape only showing average handling evidence. Dual gold breech bands.
