Description:
Smith & Wesson introduced its iconic .38 Special K-frame revolver in 1905 as the 38 Military and Police Revolver. They were used by civilians, military forces, and police agencies around the world and remain one of S&W most recognizable designs. Renamed the Model 10 in 1957, they continued their reign as the premier police sidearm in the United States until being replaced by various semi-automatic pistols beginning in the 1980s. To date, over six million have been built, making it one of the most popular and successful handgun designs in history. This S&W "Pre-Model 10" M&P .38 is a post-war example built between 1945-1948. This can be derived from the serial's 'S'-prefix and its 5-screw frame matches the period as well. The barrel markings also feature a "lazy ampersand" Smith & Wesson rollmark—a small detail notable to some collectors. The gun is in very nice shape, with no visible rust or pitting, even under the original, diamond pattern checkered wood grip panels. The serial number matches on the grip frame, the cylinder flat, and the grip panels. An 'S' stamped on the cylinder indicates it was factory heat-treated. The checkered hammer and serrated trigger are color case-hardened. The five-inch barrel shows some holster wear, and the bore is bright and clean; It looks as if it has been carried quite a bit, but shot only a little. The action is smooth and the lockup is nice and tight. No box or case is included with this M&P .38. .38 Special + P
