Description: In the late 1950's, there were several efforts made to design a hot centerfire .22 caliber handgun and/or rifle cartridge for target work and varmint hunting. One result was the .22 Remington Jet. It used a tapered down .357 Magnum case (resulting in a very unique bowling-pin-esque cartridge shape) to propel a bullet to velocities of 1800 to 2000 feet per second. There were some serious challenges, however, and it didn't achieve a high degree of commercial success. It was eventually supplanted by the .22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire cartridge, which remains popular today. The Smith & Wesson Model 53 was one of very few guns chambered for .22 Jet, but possibly the most interesting: The Model 53 is a medium K-frame revolver with 6-round fluted cylinder and 6-inch pinned-barrel. The unique factor of the Model 53 was that, from the factory, Smith & Wesson included removable inserts for each chamber of the cylinder that would allow shooters to use .22 Long Rifle cartridges. In order to properly complete the caliber conversion, the firing pin could actually be rotated to switch between a centerfire and rimfire position! Unfortunately, this piece does not include those inserts. But, the feature is a very interesting piece of engineering and firearms design. The Model 53 did see one later version in the 53-2—skipping the 53-1 designation—but would be removed from S&W's lineup in 1974 and the last production model is reported to have shipped in 1979. The gun features a deep blued finish and checkered walnut target stocks with inlaid S&W logo medallions. The rear sight is adjustable with a square notch and the front is a fixed serrated ramp with a grooved rib. The serial number places it as a 1961 production model. The barrel is marked ".22 Magnum" since it was designed and built before the .22 WMR began to dominate the market. There is some minor holster wear along the muzzle. There is some slight pitting in the finish on the right side of the barrel. The grip panels have darkened with age and do show some minor nicks. No box or case is included with this Model 53. .22 Remington Jet Price: $1,199.99 Chambers: .22 Remington Jet Magnum Metal Condition: Good Wood Condition: Good Bore Condition: Good Barrels: 6" pinned barrel Triggers: Double/single-action; color case-hardened serrated trigger Butt Pad: Checkered diamond walnut target grips with S&W medallions Weight: 2 lbs 8 oz Sights: Adjustable square notch rear sight with fixed serrated ramped front sight and grooved rib Item Location: Kearney, NE |
