Description:
Very nice and unaltered Winchester Model 54 in 30-06 caliber.
S/N 38600A made in 1933. This is the later of the eventual 2 standard rifle styles with its more refined stock which very closely resembles its immediate successor, the world reknown Pre War Model 70.
These later rifles also had a ramped front sight base like a Model 70, instead of the smaller post style ramp with beaded blade insert of the earlier rifles.
The barreled action shows mostly bright and consistent bluing, with scattered light scratches and rubs. The bottom metal is very decent for this model, but does show some of the typical flaking and browning so often seen. The buttplate has worn to silver.
The wood is also nice with typical handling marks throughout, but no deep gouges or cracks and an overall even coloration. I'm sure it has had a light scrub and rub with linseed type oil over its many years, but has not been sanded and the checkering remains completely clear and open.
The barrel channel is good with no bedding, routing, or other issues. The rear receiver bridge remains correctly UNDRILLED.
All components are original issue including the front and rear sights. This one has the 22g rear just like the soon to follow low comb Model 70s.
The barrel is 24" with an excellent shiny bore and all mechanical functions are smooth and proper.
There were only about 50,000 Model 54s made in all calibers and grades, and of those, I would estimate that less than 20% remain collectible by any stretch of the imagination, the majority having been grossly modified. This one remains in excellent original condition, and is one of the better examples that you will see offered over the long term.
