This is a rare example of a 6-shot percussion pepperbox engraved with the markings of Samuel Sutherland from Richmond, Virginia, on the barrel rib. According to Albaugh, Benet, and Simmons in their book “Confederate Handguns”, Sutherland was a Virginian gunsmith who repaired arms for the Confederate government. Gunsmiths like Sutherland, who contributed to the Confederate war effort, were locally known as “The Armorer of the South.” Due to limited resources for large armories, the Confederacy relied heavily on regional gunsmiths. The piece also bears the distinctive Allen & Thurber Worcester markings. The nipple shield is made of German silver. Richmond, the beating heart of the Confederacy, was a bustling center where the South's military supplies, including guns, were made, repaired, and sent out. Its prime location and importance as a major rail hub made it a lifeline for the Confederacy's fight. The city was a wellspring of weapons and supplies, so protecting it was a critical priority. With Samuel Sutherland being in Richmond during such a chaotic time, it's easy to imagine him playing a part in manufacturing, distributing, or even repairing them. Being in a city so crucial to the Confederate military, Sutherland was probably right at the forefront of the war effort. The history that pepperbox pistols’ enjoyed over the years is astounding: the Seminole Wars, Gold Rush, Mexican War and American Civil War. These guns are true relics of American history. The overall condition is good. Original brown and gray mottled patinas. Strong action. The grips have seen a few repairs, but all remains stable. Both grips hold firmly against the frame.
