Description:
Serial #197, .451 Caliber, 19" barrel with a very good, bright bore that has mild freckling and light pitting within the grooves. This is an 1861-dated carbine, and one of only sixty privately purchesed to arm select troopers of the Royal Gloucestershire Hussars. The carbine has matching serial numbers on the receiver, breech lever, rear sight, and on the underside of the wrist just behind the tip of the lower tang. The barrel and receiver have a mottled gray and plum-brown patina with some pitting present on and around the nipple bolster at the breech. The breech lever has a slightly grayer tone, as does the hammer, while the "WESTLEY RICHARDS & Co. / 1861" marked lockplate has a smooth bluish-gray patina with added blue visible along its length. The walnut stock has a thick added oil finish over numerous small handling marks and minor blemishes scattered throughout, but there are no noticeable cracks or chips in the wood. The brass trigger guard and buttplate have developed a dark ochre patina over time, with a clear unit issue marking on the buttplate tang: "RGH.44" (Royal Gloucester Hussars, carbine number 44). The carbine comes equipped with the original steel ramrod, leather sight cover, and chained nipple protector. In 1861, Charles Somerset, 8th Duke of Beaufort, purchased 60 Monkey Tail carbines at his own expense to equip the best marksmen in the regiment, who were to act as outriders and skirmishers, with a quick loading, capping breechloader capable of rapid fire. The carbines were issued at the rate of 12 per squadron, until 1871, when Monkey Tails were adopted for the entire regiment. This is a truly rare piece of Victorian British military history, and is in very good-near fine condition overall. Antique;
