The Eddystone Model 1917 was based on an adaptation of Britain’s Enfield Pattern 1914, which was produced by Remington’s Eddystone plant and Winchester during World War I. This occurred before the United States officially entered the war in April 1917. Once the U.S. joined the conflict, it required a large quantity of small arms for its armed forces. Instead of retooling factories to produce the American Model 1903, the U.S. Ordnance Department chose to modify the existing Enfield Pattern 1914 rifles to meet American specifications, primarily chambering them for the .30-06 Springfield cartridge. These rifles were designated the U.S. Model 1917 and were issued to equip the American Expeditionary Force in Europe during World War I. An M1917 Enfield rifle was used by Sergeant Alvin C. York on October 8, 1918, during the event for which he was awarded the Medal of Honor, according to the U.S. 82nds division’s official history. His citation for the medal reads “After his platoon had suffered heavy casualties and 3 other noncommissioned officers had become casualties, Cpl. York assumed command. Fearlessly leading 7 men, he charged with great daring a machinegun nest which was pouring deadly and incessant fire upon his platoon. In this heroic feat the machinegun nest was taken, together with 4 officers and 128 men and several guns.” The top of the barrel is marked “U.S./MODEL OF 1917/EDDYSTONE”. The overall condition is very good. Arsenal refurbished. Strong action. Semi-bright bore with crisp rifling. This example sports a solid stock with an average amount of wear. Legible markings.
