This is the classic “Broomhandle” that was produced in 9mm in the middle of the Great War. During World War I, the Imperial German Army contracted with Mauser for 150,000 C96 pistols chambered in 9mm Parabellum to offset the slow production of the standard-issue Luger P.08 pistol. They use the same clip-loaded internal box magazines as the 7.63mm Mauser and also hold ten rounds. The Mauser Broomhandle was one of the Mauser Company’s most successful pistols and was even used by the likes of Winston Churchill during the Boer Wars. He is attributed as saying that it was “the best thing in the world”. The grip earned the gun the nickname "broomhandle" in the English-speaking world, because of its round wooden handle, and in China this pistol was nicknamed the "box cannon" because of its rectangular internal magazine. The overall condition is fine. Restored and re-barreled with a 9x19mm Luger chambered barrel circa the 1980s by Oyster Bay. Very nice blue finish. The action is excellent. The bore is shiny bright with sharp rifling. The grips are solid. These are very neat, early semi-automatic pistols! Own the original! This firearm is classified as a Curio & Relic.
