Description:
Nicknamed the “Thunderer” this gun features a 2-1/2 ejectorless barrel marked “COLT D. A. 41” in etched panel on left side and the two-line Colt Hartford address on top. The frame, trigger guard and backstrap are marked with full serial number “23054” along with the back of the cylinder being marked with only the last two digits “54”. The left side rear bow of the trigger guard is  marked 41 CAL. It has full nickel finish and is factory engraved in a leafy scroll pattern on beaded backgrounds along with some zig-zag line and dot borders on the barrel sides, cylinder flats, and frame. Black hard rubber grips with a Rampant Colt in ovals. Very fine condition overall, retains 80% original nickel finish with the balance a gray patina. The top, back of the hammer and screw heads show most original fire/nitre blue finish. Though the nicknames "Thunderer" (.41 caliber), "Lightning," (.38 caliber) and ”Rainmaker," (.32 caliber) are all excellent marketing material, they were not names ever actually used by Colt. These nicknames are believed to have been coined by the famous Colt distributor, Benjamin Kittredge, who is also believed to have been responsible for giving the Single Action Army its iconic nickname, “Peacemaker". Comes with factory letter stating this revolver was shipped on February 15, 1884, to Simmons Hardware Company in St. Louis, Missouri, the gateway to the west, and confirms its current configuration as factory engraved in .41 caliber, with a scarce 2 1/2 inch barrel, nickel finish, and hard rubber stocks.
