Description:
Serial # 687466, 45ACP, 5” High Standard barrel with a really outstanding, bright, excellent bore.  This is an interesting - and in our estimation - a fine example, of a U.S. Arsenal World War II rebuild, with what appears in all respects to be a Colt frame and obviously an original Union Switch & Signal slide.  The slide shows a nice, even honest fading gray-green parkerized finish, the sharp edges and high points toned to a pewter gunmetal patina, the metal surfaces overall nice and smooth.  The frame shows what is clearly a later dark gray-greenish parkerized finish, showing wear on the high edges and contact points, with sparsely scattered areas of light pinprick pitting beneath, obviously why the frame was re-parked.  The component parts seem correct for Second World War-era arsenal rebuilt guns, the barrel really stellar.  The diamond-checkered walnut grips rate very fine with light handling marks and a few chipped diamonds, with 13 rows between the diamonds, no doubt also arsenal replacements.  The frame itself has “G” stamping below the disconnector hole, denoting a Colt frame made for U.S. Government contract, with inspector Hosmer’s “H” above the disconnector hole.  Removal of a grip reveals Colt’s war-time expedient “heart-shaped” milling, approved by U.S. Ordnance to speed up production of their frames, saving the milling along the button and top surfaces that would otherwise make the under-grip cut straight and seamless.  While the slide markings are clearly all-original “U.S. & S.”, the frame’s “United States Property” marking was either never applied, or extremely neatly removed from the frame, with no evidence it was ever even there and no evidence of polishing or grinding to remove it, however the remnants of the U.S. "(eaglehead)/S17” inspection stamp remain on the left of frame below the magazine release.  The serial number marking does not precisely match other Colt examples, but may have merely been arsenal re-stamped when re-done for re-issue (see images-admittedly my photography skills are not stellar so I did take multiple images in some case)  The pistol functions perfectly mechanically and comes with one 7-round “L” marked M.S. Little magazine, the mag a dark gray-blue patina.   Overall a scarce and desirable Colt - Union Switch & Signal, U.S. 1911 pistol, that was made for the Great War and was likely U.S. Arsenal rebuilt for the next great conflict, doubtless serving through that war and being made ready for "the next big thing" - that being Korea.  A respectable 1911 Government Model pistol, that would be a great example piece for the U.S. Martial or World Wars Collector, destined to appreciate in value, as these guns go up, up and up every year; it  no doubt would still be an absolutely GREAT shooter with its outstanding bore.  C&R OK where permitted; check your local laws before .
