Remington 742 Woodsmaster – 308Win – 22" Barrel – With Leupold 2-7x Vari-X II Scope
Remington’s 742 Woodsmaster was a tremendous success for Remington. In the 20 years that the 742 was manufactured (1960-1980), over 1.4 million rifles were sold. There was, and still is, a lot to like about the 742. It is fast-firing, soft recoiling and it came in a variety of calibers. For many folks, it’s the perfect deer rifle. One note on the 742 . . . don’t take it out, get it wet and dirty and throw it in the gun safe until next season. Keep your rifle clean and it will take about as many game animals as you want.
The 742 that we have on consignment is chambered in 308 Win and has a 22 inch barrel. Based on the RI barrel code on this rifle, it was manufactured in November, 1976. Serial number on the rifle is A7290357.
The 742 rifles came with front and rear sights but the rear sight on ours has been removed to accommodate the very nice Leupold scope that’s already mounted on the rifle. The brass bead front sight remains in place. The rifle is fed from a four round detachable magazine. The magazines have a button on the slide that is the bolt release. The magazine release is just behind the magazine.
The wood is a checkered, pistol grip stock. A black cap is on the bottom side of the pistol grip. A black, Remington buttpad sits at the end of the stock.
The wood rates as Very Good. There are certainly signs of use but there are no major defects. The buttpad is Good and shows no damage. The metal on the barrel is Good but there is some light pitting on the underneath side of the barrel. It is not deep. The metal on the receiver is also Good but it does have a lengthy scratch on the right side, just above the magazine. The bore is good and clean. The barrel is bright. The trigger is light and smooth.
As mentioned earlier, a Leupold scope is mounted on the rifle. It’s a 2-7x Vari-X II model. The glass is clear and the reticle is sharp. The exterior of the scope is in Very Good condition. Although this is an older model Leupold, you can good check prices on the secondary market for this scope by itself and it still brings a very strong price and having it on this rifle is a tremendous value.
We think that this is a very nice rifle with a high quality scope. It sure looks like it has a lot of life left in it. If 308 Win is your desired caliber and you’d like a semi-auto instead of a bolt, this may be the one for you!
