Savage Model 24A Combo Gun – 22LR / 410 Ga – 24" Barrels – Pre-1965 – Excellent Condition
The Savage Model 24 has a lengthy and interesting history. The model was originally made by Stevens as the Model 22-410 in 1938. In World War II, the Army Air Corps purchased 15,000 Model 22-410s for use as survival guns. In 1950, Stevens stopped making the 22-410 and Savage started producing the Model 24. The models changed some over the years, as did the caliber offerings, but the gun itself was manufactured until 2010. Not a bad run.
The Model 24 or 24A was manufactured from 1950 – 1965. Since serial numbers were not required until 1968, the earlier 24s did not have a serial number. You are normally able to narrow down the year of production by a date code stamped on the barrel lug. In the case of this gun, that stamp was not legible enough for us to read so we can’t accurately date the gun other than saying it was made between 1950 and 1962.
The upper barrel on this gun is chambered for 22LR. The lower barrel is for 410 Gauge shells up to 3 inches. The barrels are 24 inches long. A barrel selector is located on the right side of the receiver so that you can select either the upper or lower barrel to be fired by the single trigger. The barrel selector moves as it should. These models had an exposed hammer, the break open on top and the single trigger as mentioned. An adjustable rear sight is located on top of the 22LR barrel and the front sight is fixed.
The bore on this particular gun is very clean and very bright. Both barrels are bright as well. The rifling on the 22LR barrel looks good. The lockup on the barrels is tight with no play. The receiver is color case hardened and the finish is still evident and looks fantastic. The barrel finish is almost entirely intact except for a ding on the right side, at the muzzle end of the 22LR barrel.
Most of these guns had smooth stocks but our has a very attractive checkering. We’ve sold another rifle for the same owner that was beautifully hand checkered and we believe this one to be hand checkered by the same person. It’s great work and a great look. The pistol grip is capped by a checkered cap also. A black buttpad sits at the end of the stock and is in Good shape. The wood is in Very Good condition, as the pictures will show.
If you’re looking for a Savage 24A and find one that is in this age range and is in this condtion, I’d grab it. We just don’t think that you’re going to find one that’s nicer than the one we have. Please look through the photos and see if you agree!
