Here Ancestry Guns presents a Spanish AYA Aguirre y Aranzabal Model 4/53 Boxlock Double Barrel Side by Side Hammerless Shotgun, made circa the late 1970s to the early 1980s in Eibar, Spain. Miguel Aguirre and Nicolas Aranzabal journeyed to Barcelona, Spain, to apprentice under German gunmaker Eduardo Schilling and eventually in 1915 founded Aguirre y Aranzabal, more commonly referred to as AYA shotguns.
A masterclass in traditional Basque gunmaking, the AYA 4/53 embodies the timeless artistry and precision craftsmanship that has made Aguirre y Aranzabal a legend among fine shotgun makers. Hand-built in Eibar, Spain, this elegant side-by-side is a faithful homage to the classic English game gun — combining Old World charm with exceptional handling and performance.
The Model 4/53 features finely balanced 28-inch barrels, chopper-lump construction, and a hand-finished action adorned with exquisite rose-and-scroll engraving. The rich walnut stock, meticulously checkered and oil-finished, offers both beauty and perfect ergonomics for instinctive shooting. Smooth double triggers, automatic ejectors, and a straight English grip complete its refined sporting character.
Renowned for its crisp lockwork and lively balance, the AYA 4/53 is not just a firearm — it’s a statement of tradition, quality, and heritage.
The overall condition is fine. Original blue finish and case colors. The actions are excellent. The left bore has a slight bulge near the muzzle; otherwise both bores are extremely bright and smooth. The stock is in fine condition and smooth with nice wood grain. Numbers match.
