One of the most distiquishing features of the 336 is the use of a side ejection port with a rounded bolt, having a much stronger and simpler bolt making it handle the much more powerful modern and magnum loads. And with the side ejection port it is much more resistant to dust and dirt falling into the top of it compared to the top ejector lever action rifles. This 336 is the cross bolt safety model, with the safety preventing the hammer from going all the way forward and hitting the firing pin.
