Description:
Westley Richards Monkeytail Percussion Carbine – .450 Whitworth – 25" Barrel
Serial #6255 | Dated 1873 | .450 Whitworth Caliber | No. 4473
A fine example of the Westley Richards Monkeytail Percussion Carbine, chambered in .450 Whitworth and dated 1873, this scarce breechloader features the distinctive monkeytail lever breech system. This particular model likely served a commercial or colonial market and retains the original character and working integrity that made Westley Richards a major name in 19th-century firearms innovation.
Features a 25" barrel, percussion ignition, and military-style sights. The bore is bright and sharply rifled, showing the accuracy potential of the Whitworth pattern rifling. Metal surfaces have aged to a mottled, untouched patina, and the gun remains in mechanically sound condition.
  • Caliber: .450 Whitworth
  • Barrel Length: 25"
  • Action: Monkeytail breech-loading percussion
  • Ignition: Percussion
  • Stock: Hardwood, lightly cleaned long ago
  • Markings: Dated 1873, serial #6255
  • Weight: Approx. 7 lbs.
  • Category: Antique (No FFL Required Where Permitted)
  • No. 4473 Required
Condition: Very fine as found. Metal has naturally toned to a mottled brown patina, consistent with honest age. Bright bore with sharp rifling—better than typically seen on these carbines. Mechanically excellent. Wood shows evidence of old cleaning but remains solid and serviceable, with typical small dings and age character.
An increasingly hard-to-find British percussion breechloader in the highly desirable .450 Whitworth caliber—an excellent addition to a serious British military or Westley Richards collection.
