Description: For sale is a sporterized military surplus Steyr Model 1895M rifle, more generally called an M95M. The original Steyr M95 was a straight-pull bolt-action military rifle designed and used by the Austro-Hungarian army in 1895. The rifles were first designed for the 8x50mm rimmed cartridge, but later rechambered for 8x56mm Rimmed in the 1930s before World War II. Also during the post-WWI period, Yugoslavia was able to take captured M95s and modify them to chamber 7.92x57mm Mauser (8mm Mauser) and use stripper clips rather than special en bloc clips. These rifles were designated as the M95/24 rifle and M95M carbine. This rifle in particular uses what seems to be a complete original M95M receiver with matching magazine and barrel. The bolt's own number, however, does not match the rest of the rifle. The barrel measures 23" long, which is the correct original length of a true military M95M. The barrel is not marked with a caliber or any proof marks, so a date cannot be well-estimated. The barrel is most likely chambered for 8mm Mauser, due to the M95M only being made for that cartridge, the numbers matching the receiver and magazine, barrel length being correct to military specifications, and there being no signs of reworking the barrel. The rifle features an original graduated rear sight with a fixed front blade sight. From best as we can tell, the stock may also be an original military stock with the fore end cut down and top halves and front barrel band removed. The bottom sling swivels would indicate it would have been an infantry stock. The stock is oil-finished with a metal buttplate and a previous owner—likely the one who sporterized this rifle—also attempted to stipple the stock's pistol grip and forend with what appears to be indentations made by a Philips head screwdriver—crude, but somewhat functional. The bluing on the barrel is fairly good, but rust has been removed with pitting below at the front and under the barrel band. The receiver's finsih is largely dilapidated, but is still intact closest to the barrel. This could indicate that the barrel has been reblued at some point. Or, previous protection from the fore end pieces has preserved it better than the exposed receiver. The barrel's inside surfaces are good and there is evidence of some light surface pitting, but there is no visible rust currently in the barrel and the rifling appears to be pretty good. This rifle also includes a surplus post-WWI-era leather sling. 8mm Mauser Price: $199.99 Barrels: 23 Weight: 7 lbs 6 oz Item Location: Bolingbrook, IL |
