The case color hardened finished sidelock action is engraved with fine English Arabesque scrolls and each lockplate is engraved "Jno Rigby & Co" in Old English script, carved leaf fences and fit with disc set strikers, fire-blued double triggers where the front is trigger blade is checkered and the rear smooth, protected by an engraved trigger guard extending to a bottom strap with the gun's serial number and a non-automatic safety. The engraved top strap has "SAFE" inlaid in gold ahead of the serrated slide safety. The breech face is marked "R & B Patent 1141" (R & B stands for John Rigby and Thomas Bissell) which was patented March 21,1879 for the barrel locking method which we call the rising bite. It is also marked "986" which means that this is the 986th gun built under the R & B patent.
