It is chambered in .270 W.C.F. - This is one of the rarest variations of the pre-64 Mod.70, and it is now becoming difficult to find such a well-preserved sample. The Transitional model 70s were built for only about 2 years, soon after WW II. They used the cloverleaf receiver and changed the safety lever to be more scope-friendly. Because of this, receivers were drilled and tapped to facilitate mounting a rifle scope. The barrel is straight and true, with an excellent bore. Most transitional models retained the full oval grip that was later made more simple to make them easier to produce. This one has a Lyman 57 WJS receiver sight that requires no alteration to the stock and is fully adjustable. The front sight is original to the rifle. The bolt is numbered to the receiver. The stock has a low comb and has not been shortened, and has the original checkered steel buttplate. There are some dings and scratches in the stock, which are shown in the pictures. This one has been in the field, but has been well cared for and properly maintained. History The Winchester Model 70 Transition rifle in .270 WCF exemplifies the refined craftsmanship and performance heritage of one of America’s most beloved bolt-action rifles. Manufactured during the critical transition period between pre-64 and post-64 production changes, this model features a 24-inch tapered barrel finished in a traditional, high-quality blue, highlighting both its durability and visual appeal. The rifle is equipped with a bead blade front sight and an adjustable rear sight. As with all Model 70s of this era, the action is built around the legendary controlled round feed (CRF) system—derived from the Mauser 98 design—which provides exceptionally reliable feeding, extraction, and ejection. Hunters and professional marksmen prized this system for its reliability in rugged conditions. The rifle’s checkered walnut pistol grip stock reflects a balance of elegance and function. The checkering offers improved handling, while the classic lines and rich wood grain showcase Winchester’s dedication to traditional American styling. This model also features standard factory markings and construction that emphasizes mechanical precision and robust operation. As a bolt-action rifle, the Model 70 Transition in .270 Winchester (WCF) offers powerful, flat-shooting ballistics, ideal for big game hunting across North America. With its transitional-era features and exceptional build quality, this rifle stands as a bridge between the old-world precision of early Winchester designs and the evolving standards of modern firearm production. It remains a highly sought-after piece for collectors and a reliable companion in the field.
