This is a very special Model 21 for a few reasons. Reason #1 is that the frame is Aluminum, and this may be the only Aluminum Model 21 receiver that Winchester ever made! Please refer to Ned Schwing’s book: Winchester Finest * The Model 21, on page 215 there is specific mention of an experimental 28-gauge Model 21 made with an Aluminum frame made around 1937. That gun weighed only 4 lbs. 13 oz. and when test fired with proof loads the barrels ruptured! So, this 21 that I am offering is believed to have been built using that exact same 1937 experimental Aluminum frame and then completed as this gun sometime much later, and probably not by Winchester! Reason #2: Whoever did complete the gun did it right! The gun is fitted with a set of proprietary 28-gauge barrels that are NOT the customary heavy 20-gauge barrels with a 28 gauge bore! These barrels were made for this narrower receiver and thus the gun with the 28-gauge barrels weighs 6 lbs. 1 oz. Reason #3: The 20-gauge barrels are bespoke to this frame as well with a total gun weight of 6 lbs. 3 oz. Measuring across the top, from outside shoulder to outside shoulder the width is 1 59/64” compared to 2 3/64” on a standard 20-gauge frame.. this gun is 9/64” narrower! This gun was listed for sale by Bass Pro about 20 years ago for $39,999.99 (see photo of sale tag). At that time, it was believed to be a Winchester through-and-through. I have reasons to believe that although this is a very, very interesting Model 21, the completed gun was not built by Winchester! Also, from a very good source I am told the “Winchester” work order is not authentic. The pistol grip stock has a 14 5/8” LOP over a (chipped) Winchester Butt plate. 1 7/16” drop at the comb and 2 5/8” drop at the heel with a slight cast favoring a left-hand shooter. Individual beavertail forearms and all three pieces are checkered in a Winchester “A” carved pattern. The gun remains in 98%+ condition except for the damage to the plastic Butt plate. It is cased in an appropriate full leather two-barrel set luggage case. Regardless of if your buy the gun because of the historically important Aluminum frame and/or because it is a delightful bird gun...IT IS A "NEAT" GUN! Serial number: ALEX1 Price: $24,750.00 |
