Description:
Here is an antique cap and ball side by side double barrel German made howdah pistol coachgun being sold to help liquidate a local NE Ohio estate.

Made in the German town of Mehlis by the gunsmith C. Schilling. It dates from Circa 1850s. .

Gauge unknown. Inside barrel diameter is about 11/16.  It's either a 12 or 16 gauge.

Exposed hammers and PLEASE NOTE the opposing pieces which look like hammers - I have never seen these beforee but my guess is that they function as a safety device but I am not at all sure. If anyone out there knows what they are for I would love to know, thanks. I could pull back the hammers, they are very stiff. I did not cock the hammers. A good cleaning and oiling is suggested.

Barrels have toned to a uniform dark gray / brown color. On the inside rust is visible and needs to be removed and finally oiled to prevent future rust from forming.

All the fittings / furniture are brass which has also age toned. PLEASE NOTE the incredible hand executed details on the brass - VERY ornate !!

PLEASE NOTE the original ramrod which is housed on the underside of the stock.

Beatiful age toned wood. To my eye it does not look like walnut and might be age toned hard maple. Hard to miss the crack in the handle. The crackat the very least needs to be stabilized with an epoxy and then maybe filled with a quality wood filler and finally stained. Also visible on the handle are the silver brads which were used for enhancing the grip but also for there beauty.

Everything about this firearm says High Quality.

I have listed a Buy It Now price but don't be afraid to email an offer. Of course I have the right to refuse any offer.

Once the Pistol sells please call and we can arrange for payment. I ship either the same or the next day after payment has been received.

I will provide a quote for shipping once I know where the pistol is going. I only pass along the exact shipping charge which is determined by package weight and size.

This is an ANTIQUE made before 1896 and therefore can ship direct to your house.

I have included lots of photos, but if there is any additional information you need please email me and I will do my best to answer your questions / concerns.

Overall - if not for the crack in the handle I would think the piece would rate very good, considering it's age of course.

Would be a great addition to any firearm collection / museum.
