Description
The Howard Arms Co. “Secret Service” .32 revolver is a compact top-break double-action pocket revolver marketed in the early 20th century. These revolvers were sold under the Howard Arms name but manufactured by Meriden Fire Arms Company, a subsidiary of Sears, Roebuck & Co. The guns were intended as affordable personal-defense weapons and were marketed through hardware stores, catalogs, and Chicago-area retailers.

Company History
Howard Arms Co.
  • Not an actual firearms manufacturer.
  • A trade name used for marketing revolvers, primarily through Fred Biffar & Co. of Chicago.
  • The name appeared on firearms made by larger manufacturers, most commonly Meriden.
Meriden Fire Arms Company
  • Founded when Sears, Roebuck & Co. acquired the machinery from Andrew Fyrberg & Sons in 1905.
  • Located in Meriden, Connecticut.
  • Produced shotguns, rifles, and small revolvers from about 1905 to 1918.
  • Known for manufacturing private-label or house-brand guns for Sears and other retailers.
  • During its peak, Meriden produced up to 100 handguns per day.
  • Operations wound down around World War I, and Sears exited the firearms manufacturing business in 1918.
  • Considered an inexpensive but interesting collector’s piece from the early 20th-century “hardware store revolver” era.
Condition: 3” raised rib barrel with a lightly pitted bore and still showing good rifling. The metal surfaces have light scratches, handling marks and pin-prick pitting mostly on the barrel. Barrel markings are clear and legible. The original hard rubber grips are in good condition with a small crack repair done to the top of the left grip.  Barrel fit is very tight. Mechanically works very well in single and double action with good lock-up and timing.

This firearm is a good example of a rare and historically significant firearm and would make an exceptional addition to any collection.
