Harrington & Richardson H&R Model 490 Topper Jr – 20 Gauge – 26" Barrel – Pre-1968
Looking at this shotgun really took us back to our youth. Simpler times, no real worries and parents that taught their children to shoot and hunt at very early ages.
This Model 490 Topper Jr from Harrington & Richardson was likely one off those shotguns that were used to teach a younger shooter. The Model 490 was manufactured from 1961 – 1983. Ours has no serial number (nor is one required) so that would place it as being made before 1968. The 490 Topper Jr was the junior version of the Model 158.
Simple times, simple shotguns. This side lever break open single shot 20 Gauge has a rebounding hammer. The 26 inch barrel has a Modified choke and a single bead sight at the muzzle end. It breaks down into 3 pieces.
The stock is a walnut pistol grip with a ventilated red rubber recoil pad at the end. The barrel is blued and the receiver is a very attractive case hardened finish. The bore could use a good cleaning but seems to be in Good shape. The barrel is bright. Lockup is tight and the gun breaks open easily. The trigger is very light and crisp. The wood is in Very Good condition. Please see the photos. The barrel does have some spots of light pitting but the majority of the finish is in good shape, as the photos will also show.
These never were high dollar shotguns. They were affordable, simple youth models. They’re also still a good way to teach a younger hunter and this one looks fantastic at the same time. Simple time, simple gun, easy purchase price. Whether this one takes you back to your own youth or is one that will teach the next generation, it’s got a lot of life in it and it’s worth adding to the collection.
Purchased includes the shotgun and a zippered soft case. No other items or accessories are included in the sale.
We have not test fired this shotgun but have performed our function checks. We find no issues to report. As with all pre-owned firearm purchases, please review the photos carefully so that you are completely comfortable with the condition of the shotgun.
