Description:
EXTREMELY SCARCE SPECIAL ORDER S&W  MODEL 1891 .38 S&W REVOLVER WITH FACTORY TARGET GRIPS, INTERESTING SERIAL NUMBER 18000. All of the frames for this model were made before 1899 making them antiques. Quoting from Supica & Nahas book STANDARD CATALOG OF SMITH & WESSON, 5TH EDITION: This is a very attractive gun, looking like a 2/3 scale New Model Number 3, and is highly sought after. However, unfortunately, there has always seemed to be a discrepancy between the number of guns supposedly manufactured and the availability of this model on the collector’s market. By manufacturing records, this model should be about as common as the Baby Russian .38 SA 1st, and maybe twenty times more common than the Model of 1891 Single Shot, with which it shares a common frame. However, our subjective impression is that one sees 10 .38 SA Firsts for every .38 SA 3rd (M-1891 Revolver), and that the Model of 1891 Revolver is, if anything, scarcer than the Model of 1891 Single Shot. With that said, these revolvers almost never seem to show up. Standard revolvers typically had 3 ¼” or 4” barrels with standard rubber grips and serial numbers placed on the butt. This example with 3 ¼” barrel has the oversize target rubber grips and the serial number correctly ON THE FRONT STRAP as the butt is covered by the grips- a good way to tell if target stocks are factory or just added at a later time. This example is the desirable blue finish with case colored hammer and trigger guard. There are small traces of case color in the most protected areas. Good aged blue overall with brighter blue in the protected areas (cylinder, top strap, frame etc.) with the balance turning a natural attractive uncleaned plum. Fine grips with one very small chip on the right grip middle of the back strap edge. Tight action and bright excellent sharp bore. Unaltered front sight. Matching numbers on the frame, cylinder and barrel. A really rare, attractive and unusual Single Action S&W antique.
