Stevens & Co. “FISH TAIL” Vest Pocket “KICKUP” Pistol JOSHUA STEVENS’ First Gun Produced on his own RARE Here Ancestry Guns presents an antique J. Stevens & Company “Fish Tail” Vest Pocket Single Shot Pistol made in in Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts. Manufactured from 1864 to 1876, approximately 1,200 total of these vest pocket pistols were produced, 200 in .22 Rimfire and 1,000 in .30 Rimfire. The Fish Tail or Kickup single shot pistol was Joshua Stevens' first work as an independent arms manufacturer and elements of the design can be seen in the Stevens firearms manufactured all the way into the 20th century. This pistol has the Stevens Chicopee Falls address on the top barrel flat and the serial number marked on the bottom of the barrel and left of the grip frame. This scarce, hard to find gun is fitted with blade front sight and smooth rosewood grips. Stevens, well known for its Tip-Up Pistols, Boy’s Rifles, and Sporting Rifles, got its start in Chicopee Falls at the closing years of the Civil War in 1864. Stevens Arms was founded by Joshua Stevens with help from backers W.B. Fay and James Taylor in Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts, in 1864 as J. Stevens & Co. His earliest product was this tip-up action single shot pistol. The overall condition is good. Gary patina. The action is strong. Dark bore, but good for its age. The left grip has been repaired and the right has a crack on each side of the screw. Markings are legible. Absent front sight blade. Own the original!
