Description:
***   SOLD PENDING FUNDS   ***   Just in From Scotland   ***   Rare James MacNaughton & Sons 28 bore lever cocking Round Action with signature distinctive long skeletonized top lever and toggle safety. Also known as "The Edinburgh Gun" MacNaughton serial number 1393 was made in 1897 and has 25-3/4” nitro steel barrels. The long toplever opens the action and also easily cocks the locks. The maker estimates that less than fifty-five 28 bore round action lever cockers were made. It was recently refurbished and sports double triggers, extractors, deep rich bluing on the barrels and action body, and a well finished stock and forearm. Presented in its period case with maker’s label and snap caps. This little Scottish wand is a delight to carry for a day afield at 5lb 1oz.

The 25-3/4” original nitro steel barrels are chambered for 2-1/2” shotshells and are topped by a raised solid concave slightly tapered rib with a golden front bead. Rumors to the contrary notwithstanding, low pressure 28 bore 2-1/2” shotshells are available in the US from RST Shells and other suppliers. The rib is inscribed “J. MacNaughton Edinburgh”. The bores are shiny and bright and the bluing is in excellent condition. The right barrel is bored 0.594 with a constriction of 0.008 for Improved Cylinder choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.035. The left barrel is also bored 0.594 and has a constriction of 0.012 for Modified choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.031.

The original straight hand stock and splinter forearm are made of nicely figured European walnut and finished off in a checkered butt. The finish is in wonderful condition and the checkering is crisp. The stock has a matching two-inch wood extension. Stock dimensions are 14-7/8” to a checkered butt by 1-1/2” by 2-1/16”. Cast off for the righthanded shot.

28 bore MacNaughton Round Actions with lever cocking, “The Edinburgh Gun,” do not become available very often. And most of the ones that do have the shorter 24” barrels. Picture yourself shooting woodcock and grouse in your favorite coverts. Or moving in on a pointed covey of quail. You will be proud to uncase this rare Scottish wonder at the range or for a day afield. Don’t let it slip away!
