Ruger SR-556 – 5.56 NATO – 16" Barrel – Adjustable Gas Piston – Just Like New
The Ruger SR-556 rifle may have been just a little bit before its time. I don’t know that we’d call it the original high-end AR platform but it did have a lot of advanced features that made it a top quality rifle both then and now. Unfortunately, the SR-556 was competing against lower priced rifles (like the Smith & Wesson M&P Sport) and the higher price point of the Ruger wasn’t selling well with the public (MSRP in 2012 was $1995). The SR-556 that we have on consignment (serial number 591-02579) was manufactured in 2012 as Ruger SKU 5902. The owner of the rifle states that he only took it out one time and the near mint condition of the rifle suggests that to be the case as well.
Chambered in 5.56 NATO, the 16 inch barrel has a 1:9 twist. The SR-556 also has a four position regulator to run the short stroke piston system. There are a lot of shooters that value the piston system over the more common direct impingement system. The piston system generally provides cleaner operation and better durability in addition to being more reliable in all conditions.
Ruger topped the rifle off with Samson folding iron sights. The quad-railed handguard is from Troy Industries and allows the shooter to place desired attachments just about anywhere along the 3, 6 and 9 o’clock positions. The bolt and gas piston are chrome plated and the barrel is chrome lined.
A vertical forward grip, rubberized pistol grip from Hogue, multi position collapsible stock, dust cover and forward assist are other features included on the rifle.
The bore is minty and the barrel is exceptionally bright while the rifling looks strong. The finish is Near Mint as well and we find a near absence of even storage marks.
If you love the AR platform but don’t want another ho-hum black rifle, the SR-556 won’t disappoint.
Purchase includes the rifle equipped as shown, (3) 30 round magazines (still in the packaging) and owner’s manual.
