The SIG Sauer P226 was developed in the early 1980s to compete in the U.S. military‚s XM9 service pistol trials, where it was a finalist but ultimately lost to the Beretta M9. Despite losing the main contract, the P226 gained a following after the U.S. Navy SEALs officially adopted it in 1989 as the MK25. This adoption cemented its reputation for reliability and performance in adverse conditions, leading to widespread use by law enforcement and military units around the world.
