Description: Rare Whitney-Laidley Style I Deluxe “Split Breech” Rolling Block Sporting Rifle, .40-50 CF, mfg. 1871-1881. These rifles are very scarce in standard configuration let alone a fine deluxe such as this. Made as a competitor to Remington's No. 1 Rolling Block the Whitney-Laidley actually had a safer design consisting of a four-piece action with three hammer positions. Allegedly around 5,000 sporting rifles were made in numerous calibers and configurations but in reality that number was probably much less. This example features a heavy 28" long octagon barrel which measures exactly 1 1/16" across the breech tapering to about 15/16" across the muzzle. Original silver blade front sight atop a dovetailed iron base with adjustable flip-up sliding ladder rear. There are two plugs in the upper tang for mounting a vernier style sight which are either factory filled or otherwise expertly done at the time. The barrel retains approximately 80% bright original bluing thinning toward the muzzle and edges with superfine freckling throughout. Case hardened frame has mostly turned silver with hints of color on the hammer and fire bluing on the breechblock. Beautiful highly figured stock features a half-checkered pistol grip with diamond checkered cap and pewter forend tip. The wood retains 80%+ original finish with a lovely unmolested appearance and no chips, cracks, or repairs. Original steel shotgun style buttplate. The tip of the upper tang sits a bit high as the screw seems to be stripped but everything remains solid and without any movement. Whitneyville Armory address on upper tang is partially worn with matching serial number “13096” stamped on lower tang and under the barrel. Top of breech is marked “40 CAL C.F.” with “50 GR” on bottom flat ahead of the forearm. The action is remarkably crisp and functions absolutely flawlessly. A really neat and interesting design compared to the basic two-piece Remington action. Original firing pin and cartridge extractor function properly. Bright and shiny bore with sharp rifling front to back and light/moderate fine blackpowder frosting throughout. A very handsome and rare deluxe Whitney-Laidley in wonderful original condition. This rifle came out of a local estate a few years back and has never been publicly offered.
