Description:
.64 caliber, 28" full octagon and swamped barrel with "JOHANN JACOB KUCHENREUTER" in silver on the barrel flat and the maker's touchmark in gold in 3 places.  Full length incised & relief carved stock with sliding wooden patchbox.  Brass mounts and triggerguard.  The English percussion lock is signed "THOMAS SMITH, 55 PARLIAMENT ST".  A beautiful rifle with superb barrel and stock work of an earlier period by Kucheneruter  ca. 1750-70.  Brass mounts and triggerguard are also from the earlier period.   Thomas Smith worked at the Parliament St. address from 1835-1839 when the conversion to percussion would have occurred.  The percussion lock retains considerable casehardened finish and is mechanically excellent.    Very high quality.
