Abercrombie & Fitch was founded in 1892 as a high-end sporting goods store in New York City, where this gun was initially received in December of 1963.  Abercrombie & Fitch had expanded across the U.S. to other major cities including San Francisco-the final destination of this gun, it  was transferred there on September 1, 1964.  A far cry from the retailer we see in the shopping malls today, A&F was held in the highest regard for wide ranging, excellent sporting wares of all sorts.  If you happen to be my age, you may remember the store as the place to get an oversized flannel shirt and have “Summer Girls” by LFO running through your head.  The brand has stood the test of time, but not nearly as well as this beautiful shotgun. This model was made to the retailer’s specifications and sold at a price equal to that of a Holland & Holland Royal single trigger, and just above the price of the Royal with a double trigger. Interestingly, this gun was proofed in the Birmingham Proof House in 1963, not London as would be typical for Hollands of that era. The 26-½” barrels are topped with a blued rib and silver front bead.  At the breech end of the rib, you’ll find the Abercrombie & Fitch moniker engraved along with scroll that has been continued from the frame.  The muzzle shows just the slightest bluing wear from going in and out of a case over time.  Overall, the barrel finish is 99% and the bores are mirror.  The gun is tight on hinge and locks up tight on face with the lever landing just slightly left of center.  The wood to metal fit is superb.  The coverage on nearly every metal surface of fine scroll engraving is sharp and clean.  The engraver left the smallest negative space surrounding the maker’s name on the sidelock, and the A&F Co logo, which is inlayed with gold.  Vibrant case color remains on the entire frame, the sidelocks and even the triggers.  The top lever and trigger guard retain 85% factory blue.  Almost all of the wear is found on the long tang of the trigger guard where the shooter’s hand grips the wrist of the gun.  The rich hues of the beautifully figured walnut forend and English stock are adorned with drop points and exceptional point checkering with mullered borders.  Whether you recognize the A&F brand as a historical sporting goods store, the nostalgic shopping mall destination, or not at all, this fantastic Holland & Holland 12 bore will be an amazing addition to your collection for field use, clays, or just to look at. We provide the most comprehensive photography and specifications in the marketplace to guide you in making an informed choice. Just remember, nowhere is it more apparent than in the gun world…you get what you pay for!
