Then, in September of 1961, the company moved all operations to Westfield, Massachusetts. Arthur W. Savage, the founder of Savage Arms, was a restless and inventive spirit who tried his hand at just about everything in his lifetime. Born in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1857 to British parents, he traveled widely, studying in Baltimore and the UK, then exploring Australia, where he looked for precious stones, homesteaded, and ran cattle. He married and had eight children there before moving to Jamaica to try his hand at farming, likely growing coffee and bananas. Later, he managed the Utica Belt Line Railroad in New York, all while tinkering with firearm designs. By 1894, Savage found his true calling and launched his namesake company. Competing with giants like Winchester, he introduced innovative firearms like the Model 1895 lever-action rifle and the beloved Model 1899, known for its unique cartridges and rotary magazine which is still influential today.
