Rare Antique Smith & Wesson .38 Hammerless 3rd Model Top Break Revolver.

The Smith & Wesson .38 Hammerless 3rd model Top Break Revolver was a popular firearm manufactured by the Smith & Wesson company from 1890 to 1898. The serial number 49794 indicates that this particular revolver was made during this time period, produced in the first year of production,1890.  It is chambered in .38 S&W and has a 5-shot cylinder.

Condition:  3 1/4" barrel with a very good bore showing a few scattered oxidation stains . Still showing very strong rifling.  The nickel finish on the metal surfaces of the gun remains intact, with most of the original plate still present. There is some edge wear and scattered oxidation stains, freckling along the barrel rib but these do not detract from the overall appearance of the gun. The original Black Checkered monogram grips on this revolver are in excellent conditionand. The trigger retains some strong case-hardened color on the sides. All appropriate parts are correctly numbered to the gun, and it functions mechanically with correct timing and lock-up. The barrel-to-frame fit remains tight.

It was a popular choice for law enforcement officers and private citizens alike. The hammerless design , concealed hammer and grip safety made it easier to carry and reduced the likelihood of snagging on clothing or other objects. Back in this era holsters were very seldom used and guns were sometimes fired through the coat pocket.  Commonly referred  to as “Lemon Squeezer” because the grip safety must be squeezed as it is fired.The top break feature allowed for quick and easy reloading. 
Overall, this rare antique Smith & Wesson .38 Hammerless 3rd model Top Break Revolver is a highly collectible piece of firearms history. Its over 130 years old and in excellent condition.  It’s unique features, and rich history make it a valuable addition to any firearms collection.
