COFER CIVIL WAR Era c1850s Confederate Known for Supplying Firearms during the War Here we present an antique Engraved T.W. Cofer Long Rifle, manufactured circa the 1850s in Portsmouth, Virginia. Thomas Wrenn Cofer (1828-1885) of Portsmouth, Virginia designed a revolver in 1861 that was produced by T.W. Cofer & Co. until the fall of Portsmouth on May 10, 1862. Firearms from his shop are also known to have been used by Confederates. He later ran a gun store on Union Street in Norfolk, Virginia, until his death in 1885. This late 1850s to early 1860s rifle has traditional dovetailed blade and notch sights, “COFER PORTSMOUTH VA” marked at the breech, scroll and floral engraving, a “J. DANA & CO/WARRANTED” marked lock, double set trigger, brass mounts, and curly maple half-stock with checkered wrist and a cheekpiece. This example’s stout octagonal barrel is in .40 caliber, large enough to take small to medium sized game or to defend the homestead against unwanted aggression. Rifle manufacture in the mid-to-late 19th Century was rapidly changing over from thousands of craftsmen all over the United States and on the Frontier making and selling their wares, to the large factories with standardized assembly lines and modern manufacturing techniques. Many of the maker’s names of these percussion rifles have been lost over time. This rifle would have also been used to put food on the table or defend the homestead, or perhaps even go to war when military arms were scarce, especially in the opening days of the American Civil War. The overall condition is good. The attractively striped maple stock is refinished and remains solid. Deep checkering on the wrist. Legible markings. Robust action. Chipped hammer spur. Replacement hammer screw. The bore is dim with serviceable rifling. The lock is lightly engraved. Weak patchbox latch. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel: 36-3/8 inches. Caliber: .38 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail!
