The Remington Rolling Block rifle is a breech-loading rifle that was produced from the mid-1860s into the early 20th century by E. Remington and Sons (later Remington Arms Company). The Remington .50-70 caliber rolling block was the U.S. Army's first official cartridge rifle and among the few contenders that easily made the jump from rimfire to centerfire rounds. These can be distinguished by the extremely high curved hammer spur, the thumb lever for the breechblock that protrudes outward instead of up and the safety locking action which automatically returns the hammer to half cock when the breech is closed. They used the standard Remington military round top, rolling block action in .50-70 Center Fire caliber. The Remington Rolling Block would serve New York until the 1890s, and sources indicate these rolling blocks served with New York Militiamen deployed out West during the Indian Wars.
