Ruger Vaquero – 44 Mag – 5.5" Barrel – 6 Shot – 1997 Model
Single action revolvers always seem to bring back images of the Old West. Cowboys, gunfighters, gamblers . . . you name it. Among some of the nicest single action revolvers are the Ruger Vaquero models. They’re well built, feel great in the hand and they are just plain fun to shoot. The Vaquero that we have on consignment was manufactured in 1997 as Ruger SKU 0589 and wears serial number 56-60127.
It’s chambered for the powerful 44 Magnum round, has a 5.5 inch barrel and holds 6 rounds in a fluted cylinder. The front sight is fixed and the rear is a sight channel on top of the frame. The barrel is a blued finish while the frame is color case hardened. We’re not sure if the process that Ruger used in 1997 was a true color case hardening or more of a finish. We bring that up because many of the case hardened Vaqueros from that time period have lost a good amount of their finish. That is the case with ours as well. As you review the photos, you’ll see that much of the case hardening is gone. The surface is still smooth but the case hardening is not as visible as it was when new.
The grips are a smooth wood with the Ruger medallion embedded in the grip. The grips are in Excellent condition. There is a slight scuff on the left panel but it is minor and does not detract from the grade.
The action is smooth and the lockup is tight. A transfer bar safety in standard on this model. The trigger is light and smooth, as you’d expect from a Ruger single action.
The bore is Good but does have some fouling. The barrel is bright and the rifling appears to be strong. Finish on the barrel is mostly intact and in Very Good condition. There is a small scratch on the right side of the ejector shroud. We have attempted to provide a photo of that area.
Overall, this is a very nice example of a vintage Vaquero that is no longer in production. If a nice single action big bore is on your wish list, this Vaquero may be just what you wanted.
