Description:
LANCASTER PENNSYLVANIA Antique FORDNEY Long Rifle .40 Caliber STRIPED MAPLE

Octagonal Barrel, Double Set Trigger

Here we present an antique J. Fordney Long Rifle, made circa the mid-19th Century in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Jacob Fordney was a gunsmith whose shop had been located at corner of Orange and Prince Streets in Lancaster and was part of the Fordney family of gunmakers based out of Lancaster. He was born in 1808, died at the age of 70. The family was of French, Huguenot, descent, from the Swiss-French border area. The name originally was Fortenieux, then Fortenee and finally became Fordney. He was listed in Lancaster Directory in 1857. On November 7, 1837, he contracted with the U.S. Government for 250 rifles for Indians at $13.00 each.

This rifle features a very nicely figured maple stock, nearly 42-inch octagonal barrel in .40 caliber, a crescent butt plate, and double set triggers. This is the quintessential rifle for the American Frontier for the pioneer, the hunter, the trapper, and the settler and homesteader.

The overall condition is very good. The handsomely striped maple stock is solid and remains in good condition. The action is robust. The bore has dimmed with serviceable rifling. A very nice rifle from the cradle of the American Long Rifle!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 41-3/4 inches.

Caliber: .40 Percussion

Overall condition as seen in photos.
