In 1980, the New York State Police ordered exactly 3,000 fixed-sight, 4" .357 Magnum N-frames designated the Model 520. The contract was abruptly cancelled before delivery, leaving S&W with a completed run of revolvers that were never issued and never sold through normal channels. These guns were quietly released to distributors in 1981–1982 and instantly became one of the most coveted limited-production N-frames ever made.
This example, serial N558954, is one of the finest survivors known. It is essentially unfired – the only flaw is a single pin-head sized spot of oxidation on the cylinder (easily removed if desired). The rest of the revolver is virtually factory new, complete with its correct numbers-matching box.
