The M1C Garand was the U.S. Army‚s first standard-issue sniper version of the M1 Garand semi-automatic rifle, adopted in June 1944 during World War II. Its most defining feature was the off-set scope mount attached to the left side of the receiver, which allowed the rifle to be loaded with its 8-round en bloc clips without obstruction. Typically equipped with an M81 or M82 scope, an M2 flash hider, and a leather cheekpiece, the M1C was intended to replace the older bolt-action M1903A4. However, due to its complex and costly manufacturing process that required drilling the receiver before heat treatment, only a small number were produced during WWII. The M1C saw its most significant combat use later during the Korean War, before being largely superseded by the simpler-to-manufacture M1D Garand sniper variant.
