The Colt M4 Carbine “LE" models refer to law-enforcement/commercial variants of Colt’s military M4-pattern rifles. These became widely known in the civilian market during the 2000s–2010s and were often marked “Restricted Military / Government / Law Enforcement / Export Use Only" during the Federal Assault Weapons Ban years. After the ban expired, those markings remained on many early commercial rifles.
The Colt M4 carbine is essentially the commercial counterpart to the U.S. military’s M4/M4A1 platform.
It follows the carbine-length AR-15 pattern with the familiar telescoping stock and “M4-style" features.
LE versions were marketed to both law-enforcement agencies and qualified civilian buyers.
