Description:
Up for sale is an early-production Colt Pre-Woodsman chambered in .22 LR, serial number 1747, placing its manufacture in the first-year run of these highly collectible pistols. This example remains in original condition and features the classic 6.5 inch pencil barrel, iconic to the earliest Pre-Woodsman models.

This pistol is an early example of the original Colt .22 Automatic Target Model, known today as the Pre-Woodsman, produced during the earliest years of manufacture. Introduced in 1915, the Pre-Woodsman was Colt’s first dedicated .22 rim fire target pistol and laid the foundation for what would later become the famous Woodsman line. Serial number 1747 places this example within the initial production period, featuring the desirable thin “pencil” barrel, early diamond checkered wood grips, and classic Colt pre–World War I blued finish. These early pistols are prized for their craftsmanship, balance, and accuracy, and represent the purest form of the design before Colt rebranded the series in 1927. Early specimens such as this have become increasingly scarce and are highly sought after by Colt collectors and rim fire historians.

The pistol is C&R eligible, making it even more desirable for collectors.
It also comes with a period-correct Colt box, which is not original to this specific pistol but is appropriate for the era and makes a great display companion. Also included is a reproduction manual with a list of component parts.

This is a rare opportunity to acquire an early, low-serial-number Pre-Woodsman, an important part of Colt’s rim fire history. These first-year-production pistols seldom come to market in original condition, especially paired with a correct-era box and reproduction manual.
Early Pre-Woodsman pistols—especially those:
  • With low serial numbers
  • In original finish
  • With pencil barrels
  • In complete or period-correct boxes
…are considered the most desirable examples of the entire 1915–1977 Woodsman family.
Ideal for the Colt collector, rim fire enthusiast, or anyone seeking a high-grade early semi-auto for a curated collection.
