Classic Early 19th Century Albanian “Rat Tail” Flintlock Pistol
Offered here for sale and just acquired among a collection of Indo Persian firearms and edged weapons is this classic Albanian “rat-tail” flintlock (or more often “miquelet lock”) pistol. The “rat-tail” pistol is a type of muzzle-loading handgun often described as having a slender, tapered or “rat-tail” butt / stock. Its graceful, narrow outline made it easy to carry.
Mechanically, many of these pistols used a Miquelet lock, a type of flint-against-steel ignition widely used in Mediterranean/Eastern-Europe firearms. Despite being a “Miquelet” (or flintlock) pistol, the term “rat-tail” emphasizes the distinctive shape more than the lock type; the slender, tapering butt / grip is the defining aesthetic feature. These are strongly associated with Albanian gunsmithing traditions within the broader context of Ottoman-Balkan firearms production.
“Rat-tail” / miquelet pistols seem to have been manufactured from the 18th century through at least the first half of the 19th century. These pistols were typically carried as holster or side pistols, often worn in a sash or belt rather than a formal holster. They were common among Balkan irregular soldiers, militia, local fighters, or civilians. This pistol has seen a good deal of use and also sports a repaired/restored piece of wood top of comb. Still very complete and a fine early collectible antique pistol.
