Description:
CASED & FACTORY ENGRAVED Pre-Civil War Antique COLT M1851 Percussion NAVY

With Rare “Donut” Engraving Done 1851-1852

Here we present an antique Factory Engraved Colt Model 1851 Navy Revolver, made in 1852 in Hartford, Connecticut. This beautiful revolver showcases one of the distinct and early, pre-Gustave Young engraving patterns, known today as “Donut” style, due to its round and voluminous scrollwork, backed by light crosshatching. Wedged between the vine designs of the late-1840s and the somewhat tighter scrolls and punch-dot backgrounds of the Gustave Young era, this style lasted only from 1851 to 1852. This one also features a dolphin’s head on either side of the hammer. The serial numbers have the additional of a punchdot as a factory way to denote special treatment such as factory engraving and upgraded grips. Samuel Colt highly valued engraving and gave many such engraved pieces to friends, employees, and important people in his day as gifts and mementos. The period in which this engraving was done, which was just prior to the American Civil War, was a time when he was ramping the number of engraved guns up, and corresponds to especially skilled German craftsman were immigrating to the United States after the Revolutions of 1848.

Like the more numerous unengraved pieces, this still has the iconic Battle of Campeche roll engraved cylinder scene created by W.L. Ormsby. This set features a factory case with the lid engraved “RLW” in script. This also comes with the powder flask, .36 caliber bullet mold, cap tin, and lead bullets.
The Colt Navy was the first popular single-action revolver that could be worn comfortably on the belt. Prior to the beginning of the Civil War, the state of Missouri was a hotbed of trouble that often broke out in shooting fights. Bill Anderson, Jesse and Frank James, and the Youngers all cut their teeth on this border trouble and were ready to go when leaders like William Quantrill enlisted them in his guerilla band during the war. The boys from Missouri became quite proficient with their six-guns and generally carried a brace of Dragoons on their saddle pommels and a brace of Navy revolvers on their hip.
The overall condition is fine. Very nice blue finish, silver plate, and some faint case colors. Excellent action. Bright bore with sharp rifling. Sharp engravings. Fine, piano finished select walnut grip. Numbers match. The case and accessories are in very good condition.
