Description:
ENGRAVED/SILVER Mounted SLOTTER & CO. Antique DERRINGER Percussion Pistol

Period Copy of Henry Deringer’s Pistol J.P. LOWER

Here Ancestry Guns presents an antique J.P. Lower Retailer Marked Slotter & Co. Period Copy of Henry Deringer’s Percussion Pocket Pistol, made circa the early 1860s. J. P. Lower was a famed Denver gunsmith and entrepreneur. Just prior to his death in 1917, Lower related the following to his son who transcribed them.

“I sat for hours on end, looking at the mountains, remembering all the experiences my life had provided, good and bad. I saw the men I had wounded, the Indians I had killed and those they had killed, the heaps of buffalo hides and bones, the wasted, rotting carcasses created through my greed. I thought of all the guns I had sold to anyone who needed a weapon, how those weapons might have been used for ill-gotten gains, even murder. The gunrunning days, and all the other seen and unseen deeds of my customers, associated and acquaintances.”

Despite the elder Lower’s regrets over some of the ways his guns were used, he had made a name for himself in a profession as essential, if not as glamorous, to expanding the frontier as that of the lawman or the Army scout. Indeed, Lower stated he had probably armed every Colorado Territory lawman, badman, Indian and gambler.

The Civil War brought new technology to weapons and when sales of the Deringer pistol declined, Henry turned to the courts to defend his trademark.  Suits were brought against several of the imitators, but it was his successful 1863-70 case against A. J. Plate that set patent infringement history.  A District court awarded Deringer $1,770 in damages and issued a permanent injunction against Plate's use of the Deringer trademark. On appeal the California supreme court upheld the verdict.

The overall condition is good. Strong action, no half cock notch. The bore is in good shape for its age, although most of the rifling has smoothed. Solid wood with light handling wear and a thing repaired crack on the left forend tip. Markings are discernable. “12” is marked on the trigger guard. This example is lightly engraved.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 2 inches.

Caliber: .44 Percussion
