Description:
Antique REMINGTON-RIDER Percussion New Model BELT Single Action Revolver

SCARCE .38 CF Caliber SELF DEFENSE Revolver

Here Ancestry Guns presents an antique Remington-Rider New Model Belt Percussion Revolver, made circa 1865 to 1873 in Ilion, New York. Production of this revolver started out as a single-action, percussion revolver that was produced from 1863 to 1873. These revolvers were made during a period when Smith & Wesson owned the Rollin White Patent. Companies like Remington and Colt were relegated to continue production of revolvers with the percussion firing system until the patent expired in 1869. Once this happened, companies lost no time fitting their percussion models with various cartridge conversions or incorporating this new technology at the factory. The later manufactured revolvers in this series had the ability to fire either cartridge or percussion cylinders from the same gun.

It was a smaller version of the New Model Army and Navy revolver, but larger than the New Police. The revolver was a result of a collaboration between Remington Arms and Joseph Rider of Newark, Ohio. The new gun was introduced in 1863 and would remain in production for a decade, with total production between 2,500 and 3,000 revolvers per “Flayderman's Guide”. As the guns were serial numbered in the same range as the Remington New Model Single Action Revolvers, it is difficult to know for sure how many were produced, and a lack of surviving factory records make investigation into the matter difficult. The New Model Belt series of revolvers appear to be a concerted effort by Remington to produce a handy, personal, self-defense type revolver that would be at home in a belt holster or even a large overcoat pocket. This revolver features a six-shot cylinder chambered in .38 centerfire caliber and was designed for defensive carry.

The overall condition is fine. Original blue barrel and cylinder finish is preserved. Original silver on the trigger guard. The bore is mostly bright with strong rifling. The action is strong, although when the muzzle is pointed up the cylinder does not index. Very good grips contain average wear. Markings are legible. Matching serial numbers on the barrel, trigger guard tang, grip frame, and both grips.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 6-1/2 inches.
